Just one week after their exhilarating triumph over the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana, the Circle City Derby Girls' Socialites took on the Paper Valley Roller Girls of Appleton, Wisc., on April 28 at Ellenberger Park. The bout was the opening of a doubleheader, with the Race City Rebels men's roller derby team taking on the Green Bay Smackers. The Socialites fell to Paper Valley 243-32 in a brutal, physical battle.

The bout was a low-scoring nail-biter for the first four jams. The first jam was scoreless, with Vivi Section winning lead jammer status, but with MVP Paper Valley jammer Pissy Pistol hot on her wheels, Vivi was forced to call it off before scoring points. Roll-R Damage had better luck in the next jam, drawing the first blood and scoring three points on visiting Chop StickYa before ending the jam. The next two jams weren't so lucky for Circle City: Skully Crossbones and StickYa had the refs pointing out their lead jammer status over home-team sweethearts Liberty Spykes and Cassie Khaos, and the score raised to 6-3 in favor of PVRG.

Disaster struck for Circle City six minutes into the first half, when Vivi was called to the penalty box on a track cut, giving PVRG's Swiss Miss total point-scoring power. Jackie Bauer and Guiyatine Gretyl attempted to contain Swiss Miss with a two-wall, but she scored 20 points that jam. Circle City took a time out but was unable to regroup—PVRG won lead jammer status for eleven jams in a row, taking control of the track for most of the remainder of the half. Notable exceptions came from Vivi Section, who managed lead jammer status twice in the second quarter of the bout: The home crowd went wild when she scored Circle City's first grand slam of the evening. The score at halftime, however, remained an unpromising 112-11, with Paper Valley in the lead.

Circle City emerged from the locker room reenergized at the start of the second half, with Vivi Section earning lead jammer status in the first jam. Chop StickYa dashed the home crowd's hopes in the second jam, scoring 20 points while Socialite blockers Jackie Bauer and Lady Miss Bier struggled to maintain a powerful defense.

The physical game began to take its toll on players on both teams, as skaters careened into the penalty box for the rest of the evening. Liberty Spykes and Cassie Khaos were able to capitalize on some power jams in Circle City's favor while Skully Crossbones and Pissy Pistol did their time. CCDG players also spent time in the box—star blocker Spleana Rupture split the box with Skully and Swerving Berlin went to the box on a controversial call when she bumped some PVRG blockers before the starting whistle of one jam. Though the Socialites managed to put up some points, they couldn't undo the damage done in the first half and Pioneer Valley took the victory, 243-32. Visiting skaters Pissy Pistol and Amanda Spank also took home Best Jammer and Best Blocker awards.

After the defeat, the Circle City Derby Girls are hungry for a win, and they hope to bring home two at Hit Crew at the Forum in Fishers on Saturday, May 19. First, the Party Crashers will face off against Muncie's Cornfed Derby Dames and then the Socialites will contend with the South Bend Roller Girls.

Circle City Socialites manage ROSI 167-81 in home opener

FISHERS, IN—Spirits were high at the Fishers Fieldhouse Saturday night, when WFTDA Apprentice team Circle City Derby Girls' tackled the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana from Evansville, ranked #26 in the WFTDA North Central region. The Fieldhouse, standing in for the CCDG's usual home venue of the Forum at Fishers, made for an exciting setting—spectators sat a cozy distance from the track, a couple ending up with derby girls in their laps—but CCDG’s Socialites team adapted nicely and secured a 167-81 win to open their home season.

A combination of strong positional defense and a consistent rotation of four primary jammers proved a strong strategy for the Socialites. Both teams went point-for-point in the first two jams, with CCDG's Vivi Section and ROSI's Virgin Cherry each scoring 3 in the first jam, and Roll-R Damage and visiting Coco Creamahoe raising it to a 5-5 tie in the second. When ROSI jammer Vivien Leigh-vem Cryin' found herself on the lucky end of a power jam in the third jam of the night, she came up against a strong CCDG four wall and remained scoreless. When CCDG's Liberty Spykes emerged from the box, she managed to score on Vivien during that jam.

The following jam, home-crowd darling Cassie Khaos scored the first grand slams of the game, raising the score to 21-5 in favor of CCDG. Cassie, Vivi, Roll-R and Liberty continued to rotate every four jams, while ROSI experimented with their jammer bench and ended up in some penalty trouble, with jammers Virgin Cherry, Wallop of Daisy and Painbow Brite all allowing CCDG power jams during the first half. The halftime buzzer sounded with a score of 109-35 in the home team's favor.

ROSI rallied in the second half, while the Socialites took advantage of their comfortable lead to experiment with strategy. Cassie Khaos passed the star to pivot Jackie Bauer at the start of the half, allowing Virgin Cherry to obtain lead jammer status, though both teams remained scoreless. Still, ROSI gained momentum, thanks to several jams in which CCDG filled the penalty box, and boosted their score by 46 points in the second half. Lead jammer status switched almost from jam to jam as ROSI became comfortable, and a serious injury that sent Annie Shenanigans out in a stretcher during the ninth jam of the half seemed to light a fire under the visiting team's wheels.

By the bout's last quarter, however, ROSI found themselves in penalty trouble once more, with a full penalty box in the last several jams of the bout. The last jam had the same jammer lineup as the first, and when Virgin Cherry was sent to the penalty box on a major back block, Vivi Section hammed for the crowd, running down the clock as she took a leisurely skate around the track. The final score was 167-81. Virgin Cherry and Sailor Scary were awarded MVP jammer and blocker for ROSI, respectively, and both teams split the after-party victory.

CCDG has no time to rest on their laurels, however—this week the Socialites are gearing up to play the Paper Valley Rollergirls, ranked #19 in the North Central region, in a doubleheader with the Race City Rebels and the Green Bay Smackers on April 28 at Ellenberger.

Party Crashers Face Tough Battles at Bloomington’s B-Cup

The Circle City Derby Girls’ Party Crashers lost a bruising bout against the Brewcity Bruisers’ Battlestars in the first round of the B-Cup Tournament over the weekend. The Battlestars of Milwaukee pummeled the Party Crashers with strong waterfalling that broke up their defense and left their jammers unable to break from the pack or achieve lead in most jams, resulting in a 254-31 loss. Brewcity went on to take championship honors in the two-day tournament hosted by the Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls on February 4-5.

The fist jam pitted green jammer Cassie Khaos against Moby Nipps for black. Brewcity took a knee to start the jam immediately and Moby quickly achieved lead as Cassie struggled in the pack. Moby put 6 points on the board for Milwaukee before Cassie broke free, causing her opponent to call it. The second jam didn’t go much better for CCDG, with Brewcity jammer Wipeout Scout adding 15 points to their lead during a full two- minute jam in which her blockers effectively contained Blazin’ Blitz in the pack. It wasn’t until the sixth jam that green jammer Wrecker Becker put CCDG’s first points on the board, bringing the score to 42-2. Three jams later, Cassie grabbed lead jammer status for the CCDG’s first time. The Derby Girls’ blockers were able to hold Mother Tucker back long enough for Cassie to score 2 points, with newcomer Trudy Bauchery taking out the black jammer just as she was about to emerge from the pack. Right before the half, Derby Girls’ blockers Guiyatine Gretyl, Mistress Azrael and GunnHoe held up Milwaukee jammer Wipeout Scout long enough for Tiny Ann Mighty to achieve lead jammer status and score 3 points, but Brewcity had already pulled away considerably, at 135-9.

The second half didn’t go much better, with CCDG jammers consistently held up by Milwaukee’s strong defense and unable to achieve lead most of the time. Green managed to put up a few more points, including a final jam in which the gold jammer started in the box. CCDG blockers Wrecker, Tiny, Gretyl and Dread Pirate Roberta got the jam started by taking a knee. Jammer Malice Munro added CCDG’s last 9 points to the final score, 254-31.

Saturday’s contest marked the bout debut of three new CCDG skaters — Trudy, Crash Menagerie and Guano Loco. The Battlestars went on to capture the B-Cup trophy after beating the Grand Raggidy Rollergirls’ G-Rap Attack and Naptown Rollergirls’ top-seeeded Third Alarms. The Party Crashers lost a closed consolation bout on Sunday to NEO Roller Derby’s Audio Assault, 196-47. It was the second year Bloomington hosted the B-Cup and CCDG’s second year participating. The Socialites and Party Crashers will travel to Iowa for a February 25 doubleheader against the Des Moines Derby Dames.
